62-year-old mower keeps mowing for retired owner

Just keeps mowing

The old adage of they don't make them like they used to holds true for one Superior resident.

Don Hibbs has retired from a 62-year career in the auto parts business. He and his wife, Marleen, have been married for 64 years which matches the number of years his lawn mower has seen.

The couple have grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Hibbs worked at Hastings for a few years then moved to Superior to manage Sidles auto parts store. When the opportunity arose to purchase the business, he didn't hesitate to make the purchase.

Hibbs continued to work for many years. He eventually sold the business.

Hibbs utilized his years of experience to assist customers with hard to find parts.

Along the way he purchased a lawn mower from the Superior Gambles store. Though he did not purchase the mower in 1958, this was the year it was manufactured. It appears to have remained unsold for a few years until it was purchased by Hibbs.

The lawn mower has had various parts replaced or repaired over the decades but it starts easily. Hibbs uses the mower regularly to keep his lawn in immaculate condition. Admittedly it doesn't have that new mower look but it functions just as well. It is a testament to the durability of Briggs and Stratton engines that it functions as well as it did when it was first manufactured. Gambles may be long gone but its mower keeps on working. Hibbs opined he got his money's worth on this deal. It would be hard to disagree.
