Soil Health Tour to see Wine Glass Ranch in Nebraska

Participants on the annual Soil Health Tour, hosted by the Jewell County Conservation District, will have the opportunity to tour a progressive and innovative ranch in the Sandhills of Nebraska. Wine Glass Ranch, north of Imperial, Nebraska, is a Leopold Conservation Award Recipient. The Leopold Award is given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold.  “The award recognizes landowners who inspire others with their exemplary dedication to land, water and wildlife habitat management on private, working lands,” as stated by the Sand County Foundation.

The mission of the ranch is “Productive and progressive plants and animals.” New management practices have been implemented. The focus has been placed on getting the most out of every acre by using management intensive grazing and grazing annual forage crops. The attendees will have the opportunity to see how these practices are working on the ranch, which was founded in 1888. They will participate in a guided tour, hosted by ranch manager Logan Pribbeno, great- great grandson of the ranch founder, Sherman McCoy

The charter bus loads at 6:45 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27, from the Mankato Livestock Inc. parking lot, 810 N Commercial, Mankato, Kansas. Topics covered on the bus will include cover crops for soil health, rotational grazing practices, NRCS cost-share program options plus videos of the ranch itself. Riders will also have the chance to visit and compare notes on the various conservation practices they have tried.

A complimentary noon time meal will be served at the ranch during the tour. Please RSVP as soon as possible, as seating on the charter bus will be limited.  Call 785-378-3731, ext 3, or email [email protected] to reserve your seat.
