The monthly meeting for the Mankato Chamber of Commerce took place last Wednesday at the Buffalo Roam with 11 members and five guests in attendance. The June minutes were approved with a correction made. Haley Nelson gave the treasurer's report.
The chamber welcomed Chelsea Hake to the meeting. Chelsea is the information and resources coordinator with OCCK. She serves nine counties in the area and can answer questions that people might have regarding the services that OCCK provides.
The chamber discussed the community garden. Brian Shulda reported the garden is going well and everyone is doing well at maintaining their plots.
Haley Nelson gave an update on the community birthday calendars. The chamber also discussed the picture for the 2025 calendar. Pamela Wirth is going to contact Tonya Underwood about getting a picture at the fair of all the Jewell County 4-H youth that could be featured.
The Threshing Bee will take place on Saturday, July 20. Kill Creek Rising will be playing from 8 p.m. until midnight for $800. The chamber will host the watermelon popping contest again this year at roughly 2:30 p.m. following the tractor parade. There will be a 30 minute time limit this year. After the time is up, the remaining watermelons will be sliced and served to community members at the park. Fifteen watermelons and two $10 Chamber Bucks certificates for the contest are needed for the event. Volunteers are needed to help with the watermelon contest and one more to help work the west gate from 2:30 to 4 p.m. If you can help, please contact Jason Ortman or Haley Nelson.
Grizzly Pride is looking for businesses or organizations to host tailgates at some of the home football and basketball games this year. The chamber discussed the possibility of participating in a tailgate if there are some options left after Grizzly Pride membership forms are due.
There was a 4-H Livestock Premium Sale at 6 p.m. on Sunday at the sale barn. Businesses were encouraged to go and support the 4-H youth at the sale.
The chamber honored the Jensen family at the end of the meeting. Carl and Kathy have provided a tremendous service to not only the Mankato community but also surrounding communities for the last 26 years. In their honor, the Chamber donated $25 to both the Girl Scout and Cub Scout Troops in Mankato. Present to receive the donations were Girl Scouts, Emelyn Shulda and Kylie Wirth and Cub Scouts, Ryan Holerich and Braden Wirth. The chamber wishes Carl and Kathy the best on their upcoming retirement!
The next meeting will take place Wednesday, Aug. 14, at Bob's.
