JC Fair this week

This is fair week in Jewell County. Blue Jeans and Country Dreams is the theme for the annual fair now underway on the fairgrounds near the northern edge of Mankato.

A full-page ad paid for by Jewell County business firms includes the schedule of events. For first-timers heading to the fair, the grounds may be reached by going north past the Jewell County Courthouse. The grounds are located just south of the Midway Co-op Elevator so visitors just need to home in on the grain bins which tower over Mankato.

Live fair activities begin on Friday. Activities that evening include goat roping in the livestock arena at 7 p.m.

Saturday evening events include mutton busting and bull riding at 7 p.m. in the horse arena with the Mayfield Horse Company and the American Freedom Drill Team. A dance in the covered arena begins at 9 p.m.

Sunday’s activities include a youth rodeo at 1 p.m., the public fashion show at 6 p.m. across the street at the sale barn and the stock premium sale at 7 p.m. also in the sale barn.

The following weekend is the 46th annual Threshing Bee sponsored by the Jewell County Historical Society. It will be held in the Mankato City Park and on historical society grounds located along the creek at the west edge of Mankato, north of Highway 36.

The next issue of this newspaper will have several pages devoted to the threshing bee and a special feature on the history and development of windmills. Today wind turbines are sprouting across Kansas as people are attempting to harness the wind for the production of electrical power just as windmills once sprouted in Kansas to harness the wind and pump water.
