I survived the weekend! It wasn’t a bad weekend, just hectic. Robert’s wedding reception was here at the house the evening of the Nelson Funday. I set it that day because I knew he would be here, because he has always taken leave for the Funday, but it also happens to be the busiest day for the pool, and one of the busiest for the paper. The free swim was over at 5 and the reception began at six. Several people were traveling from Kansas, and most of them were over two hours away.
The free swim was a hit. We had more than 100 people sign in to the pool, but it was cut short by the weather, so I came home and was able to catch a quick shower before all the weather hit. George and the boys, Robert, Chris and Harrison had the backyard decorated and looking really nice before we had to tear everything down. (Chris and Harrison are two of Robert’s best friends, he met them both in boot camp.) We had moved everything to the patio, expecting sprinkles and maybe a shower, but as the clouds boiled in, we decided everything needed to go inside.
Our guests started to arrive as the worst of the storm began to pour down rain and blow everything that wasn’t fastened down away. My dad and step sister arrived first and hunkered down in the car until the rain let up, but just as they started to the house, the storm let loose again. By the time they made it in, they were soaked. This soaked arrival became the norm for everyone, and all of my towels were needed. Good thing I had washed them the day before.
Julia’s mother, Jill, told me they weren’t sure what they were driving into. The sky was so dark and the clouds looked nasty. In fact everyone said that. I am surprised they all just didn’t turn around and go home. My boy and his wife have some good and faithful friends and family. That makes my heart happy!
So around 30 sopping-wet guests hung out in my “not so guest ready house” until the storm passed and we were able to set back up and start the festivities. It was a wet and wonderful evening. I had so much fun meeting Julia’s family and friends and hanging out with my boys.
Chris was married a year ago and I finally got to meet his wife, Emily. I love her to pieces. I won’t get to see them for another three years, as Chris has signed a new contract and will be based overseas. Harrison’s Army carreer was ended a couple years ago and he now lives in Florida, but he comes home to see Robert a couple times a year, and always makes the trip up to see Mom and Dad. My heart is full, and I am exhausted. X’s & O’s.
