Country Roads

Here’s wishing you had a Happy July! It’s always been a favorite month of mine but maybe one reason for that is my birthday falls in July, though I must say I don’t look forward tomy birthday as much as I did years ago.

Thoughts of July that come to mind are making homemade ice cream for friends, relatives and family who come for a Sunday afternoon visit; watching the fireworks as they are sent up into the air, bursting and flowing everywhere; trips to the swimming pool the fun of running through the yard sprinkler on a hot day; taking the trailer camper to the lake and feeling the cool breeze coming off the lake; making the bonfires for all to sit around enjoying the sunset and roasting hot dogs or delicious s’mores; going into the garden to gather those first tomatoes and other veggies; eating delicious water melon on the porch steps; attending the picnics and BBQ’s; and maybe even going on a vacation trip. All are so much fun.

This July is really special as the rains and showers have been coming at just the right time to make the lush green landscape a sight to appreciate. The fall crops look good. As a line of a song in the musical Oklahoma says, “The corn is high as an elephant’s eye.” The soybeans look green and uniformed as they fill each row in the fields. The milo and feeds so far look like they will yield a lot come fall cutting. The yards remain green and though mowing has been required more times then usual so far, no one seems to be complaining. Reports have been heard of great wheat yields this harvest, and the alfalfa cuttings have outdone themselves on the first cutting and maybe on the second cutting also. The pasture grasses are so tall that farmers tell of taking the four wheelers out to spray for thistles and the tall grass sometimes hides the thistles making them harder to find.

The past two or three years have been hard summers for farmers because of the lack of rain but thankfully not this year. We pray the rains keep coming as needed.

There are several loved ones who celebrate their birthdays this month. Besides myself, we have two granddaughters that have July birthdays, two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law. There are two family wedding anniversaries also celebrated in July. Yet, there are many loved ones that are no longer with us that had July birthdays and I miss them, including my grandmother, Daisy Heskett, my Grandad Boyles, my father, Gerald, my Aunt Norma and Uncle Bill. My aunt Norma was 10 years older than myself and her birthday was the day before mine. I remember her telling me when I was born she was so happy as she thought she received a live baby doll for her 10th birthday. That aunt and I exchanged birthday cards every year.

I hope you all are enjoying this July! It’s a ruby of a month!
