Holiday weekend rain-storm add to yearly rain total

Many folks in south central Nebraska are just sitting back and enjoying what seems to be very adequate rainfall for the year. Even with the weekend storm that toppled 30 poles in the South Central Public Power District, most of which were in Clay County, the local area has been mostly storm damaged free in 2024.

The weekend storm was interesting. The wind and rain event seemed to be the worse in the Clay Center to Sutton area, but the South Central Public Power District had to repair damage in Nuckolls and Webster counties as well. They reported there were 760 reports of electric service being lost because of the storm. As of Monday, most all outages were repaired except in instances where electricians were needed.

Rain came fast and furious with a wind throwing the rain around to make visibility limited to maybe 50 to 75 yards. It didn’t last long, however, and rainfall amounts varied as usual. Superior had a few drops; Lawrence had a little over 1/2 inch which Nelson and Oak each had about 3/4 of an inch. At the same time, Clay Center received 2 1/2 inches.

The contrast between 2024 with 2023 is remarkable. Several NRD records show the following: (1-1-2023 to 7-8-2023 and 1-1-2024 to 7-8-2024)

Superior: 5.29 in 2023 and 13.21 in 2024.

Lawrence: 16.63 in 2023 and 13.35 in 2024. (That 2023 figure might be a typo mistake as it doesn’t fit in with reports of places all around Lawrence.)

Nelson: 8.47 in 2023 and 15.76 in 2024.

Oak: 3.9 in 2023 and 14.61 in 2024.

Clay Center: 5.3 in 2023 and 17.5 in 2024.
