Rockets blast off at Jewell
It was rocket science at the Jewell Public Library on Friday morning. Steve Arthur, director of the Ellis County Library, presented information about rockets and space during a two-hour workshop. Arthur's hobby and passions are rockets, rocketry and Big Creek Rocketry.
The seven attendees were eight to 12-year old boys and girls. They were learning "applied science" as they used chemistry and physics plus some math to build their rockets. "It is STEM." said Marsha Ericson, director of the Jewell Public Library. Ericson organized the event.
Each participant assembled their own rocket. Fins and cones, insulation and parachutes all being put in the correct place. Super Glue, "just a drop" was used when needed. As the various steps dried, Arthur presented related information.
Among other things, attendees learned about growing food on the Space Station, what applied science is and the names of the four astronauts from Kansas. Nick Hague, Belleville, Joe Engle, Chapman, Steve Hawley, Ottawa, and Ron Evans, St. Francis.
When the rockets were complete, it was time for launching. The entire group moved to the old football field just a couple of blocks away. There Arthur set up the "launch pad." With an appropriate countdown, "five, four three, two, one" the rockets were off.
