Area residents celebrating USAʼs 248th birthday

4 of July

For the benefit of our e-edition readers and the print subscribers who received the paper on Wednesday, we will recap the July 4th activities we have learned about that are happening today in Superior. Unfortunately, most of our mail only subscribers will not receive this paper until sometime after July 4.

It has been difficult for us to keep up on the holiday plans as there is no longer a central coordinating agency. The Superior July 4th celebrations have long been the product of many volunteer groups and that is still true. However, for many years the activities were coordinated by the chamber of commerce office.

In addition to the events we listed last week, we have learned the Superior Youth Athletic Association is sponsoring a slow pitch softball tournament. Each team will have 10 players of which there must be an even number of boys and girls. The tournament will start after the Firekracker Run. On Monday at least three teams had registered.

In Superior, today’s festivities begin with the 42nd annual Firekracker Run. This year’s run has a new sponsor, Brodstone Community Wellness. The sponsor encouraged early registration and packet pickup but both may be done this morning starting at 6:45 at the City Park Bandshell.

The 10K race gets underway at 7:45. It traditionally has been started by the lighting of a string of firecrackers. The one mile kids run, the one mile predict and the two mile run launch at 8 a.m.

The PEO breakfast stand opens today at 7:30 in City Park.

Following the Firekracker Race, the runners and everybody else are invited to cool off in the Superior Municipal Pool. Free swimming will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The pool will close for the day at 2 p.m.

The annual FFA sponsored Water Balloon War starts at 1 p.m. on the ballfield in front of the Superior Elementary School.

Weather permitting, the Superior Volunteer Fire Department will present a fireworks display at Brodstone Memorial Field (A.K.A. the Superior High School football field) at dusk. If the weather is threatening, the event will be rescheduled. The department is accepting donations to assist in deferring the cost of the display.

Nelson Fun Days scheduled for Saturday and Sunday will offer a wide variety of activities. An advertisement in this issue of The Express describes the many events planned for Nelson.

The Burr Oak community will celebrate on Friday evening. A hot dog and ice cream meal will be served in the community center starting at 7 p.m. Fireworks will be fired at dusk.

The Jewell Community held Independence Day activities at Emerson Lake Wednesday evening.
