Independence Day brings plethora of activity options

Fourth of July activities

The Fourth of July holiday celebrations are not confined to July 4. There are a myriad of activities for the next few days to keep area residents occupied beginning today (Thursday). There is a little something for everyone.

The Superior High School chapter of the FFA will sponsor a kickball contest at the ball fields today (Thursday) beginning at 6 p.m. Teams of eight to nine players will be entered. Following the kickball contests, there will be a midnight swim at the Superior Municipal Pool. Swim time begins at 10:30 p.m. today (Thursday) and concludes at 1:30 a.m. Friday. The usual entry fee will be charged for participants.

The FFA will staff their fireworks stand in the M & R Bookkeeping parking lot from June 30 to July 4.

The FFA is holding its annual water balloon war on the grounds of the Superior Elementary School, at 1 p.m., July 4, There is no entry fee associated with the event.

The Superior Municipal Swimming Pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 4.

The 42nd annual Firekracker Run has a new sponsor this year. Brodstone Community Wellness Center is organizing and conducting the event. Early packet pickup is available Wednesday. Please see the ad in today’s paper for details. Packet pickup and late registration is scheduled at 6:45 a.m. at Superior City Park on East 6th Street. Breakfast will be available at 7:30 a.m. The meal is provided by the PEO, Superior chapter. The 10 K race gets underway at 7:45 a.m. The one mile kids run, the one mile predict and the two mile run set off at 8 a.m.

The Superior Volunteer Fire Department is holding the annual fireworks display, weather permittng, at Brodstone Memorial Field, July 4, at dusk. The department is accepting donations to assist in deferring the cost of the display

There are a wide range of activities scheduled for Nelson Fun Days Saturday and Sunday, July 6 and 7. Please refer to the ad in this paper for details.

EdgarFest kicks off Friday with a cornhole tournament at 5:30 p.m. Teams must be registered by 3 p.m. Karaoke in the beer garden is at 8:30 p.m. A wide variety of activities and events are scheduled throughout the day and evening on Saturday. The parade starts at 8 p.m. The Kyle Sayler band is in concert at 9:30 p.m.

The Jewell Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the fireworks display at Emerson Lake on Wednesday beginning at dusk. Please see the ad in this paper for details.

Burr Oak will kick off its Independence Day celebration Friday, July 5, with a supper getting underway at 7 p.m, The fireworks display will fire up at dusk. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.

All federal, state and local government offices will be closed on July 4. All banks will be closed.

Most businesses and government offices throughout the county, including this newspaper’s offices, will be closed on Thursday, July 4. And that means the delivery of next week’s printed newspapers will again be delayed by at least a day. That doesn’t mean our many readers will have to delay reading the next issue.
