Dennis Hurt

Dennis Robert Hurt, the son of Louis and Agnes (Houdek) Hurt, was born on Aug. 1, 1937, in Valparaiso, Nebraska. He died on June 16, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Society, Superior, Nebraska at the age of 86 years, 10 months, 15 days.

After graduating from high school in Dwight, Nebraska, Dennis joined the U.S. Navy spending two years on the carrier ship USS Thetis Bay. After returning home, he was united in marriage on June 27, 1959, to Jo Ann Pelan, this union was blessed with five children.

Dennis enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons when they were young. He had a deep love for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, a good fan of the Nelson Tigers, Lawrence-Nelson Raiders and was a lifetime fan of the L.A. Dodgers. He was happy to see them win the 2020 World Series. He raised Britney dogs and had a small hay business. For 17 years, they owned and operated the Sportsman Corner in Nelson. He was proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending all their activities they were in no matter where they lived. After church, listening to Polka music on the radio was a favorite on the way home. He enjoyed going to the sale barns and watching the sales, always winding up with a couple to raise.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Louis Hurt, Jr., and brother-in-law, Fred Hromas.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann of Superior; daughter, De Ann (Martin) Sunday of Windsor, California; sons, Jeff (Tina) Hurt of Windsor, California; Kevin (Theresa) Hurt of Juniata, Nebraska; Mark (Eva) Hurt of Lincoln, Nebraska and Gary (Elma) Hurt of Frisco, Texas; eight grandchildren Corey Sunday, Paige (Tim) Gooler, Jordan Hurt, Megan (Hunter) Fogle, Rachel Hurt, Austin Hurt, Kyle Hurt and Logan (Kady) Schnitker; three great-grandchildren, Jacobi and Jaden Schnitker and Grayson Gooler; his sister, Georgia Hromas of Omaha, Nebraska, and brother, John (Ann) Hurt of Sidney, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday, June 20, 2024) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Superior, Nebraska, with Fr. Birkel officiating. Lector will be Noreen Meysenburg, acolyte will be John Price, altar servers will be Nolan Meyer and Abram Carter. Music will be "Here I Am Lord," solo by Arnold Miller, and congregational hymns "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art" and "On Eagle's Wings," with Jacki Porter as the organist.

Visitation was held on Wednesday from 5 to 8 with family present from 5 to 7 at the church.

Pallbearers will be Logan Schnitcher, Corey Sunday, Austin Hurt, Kyle Hurt, Tim Gooler and Hunter Fogle. Honorary pallbearers were Arron Hurt, Bill Hotovy, Marty Hotovy, Steve Hurt, Mike Pelan, Greg Pelan, Phil Wehrman, Doug Porter, Gary Ostdiek, Ron Porter, Dale Frahm and Russ Snyder.

Interment with military honors will be in the Assumption Catholic Cemetery at Dwight, Nebraska.

Memorials are suggested to go to in care of the family to be designated later.
