There isn't a shortage of playground equipment for the youngsters in the east central Nuckolls County community of Ruskin but one site gets the most use. Perhaps that is because it is located across the street from the village's community hall and close to the Broken Spoke, the town's combination cafe and bar. While the adults in their group are engaged in conversation, the youngsters like to go to the nearby village park.
And that park is being improved.
This year the village board used donations and funds from previous community celebrations to purchase new playground equipment and the equipment has proven to be popular with the youngters even though it is currently located in what is a mud hole after a rain. The mud hole status should change later this month when the mulch order arrives and the material is spread under and around the equipment which includes swings, monkey bars and slides. In the future it is hoped teeter totters may be added.
In addition to the village park located at the western edge of the community's business district. the village also has playground equipment near the former public school site and near the former football field.
