• Weeds . . . I finally got out to do a little work in the garden and yard last week and yes, those weeds were still there. I thought I pulled enough last year that I’d never see them again. (I didn’t say all signs of Spring were pleasant.)

• Kids . . . one day when I was working outside, I heard the unmistakable squeals of happiness of children in the neighborhood. Yup, school was out. Children were enjoying playing and exploring outside in the middle of the day again. That was great.

• There were high school and college commencements all over the place. I am amused at all the comments the national media makes about what is said at some of the events. At one event, a NFL football star spoke, congratulating all the graduates on their hard work and success. He went on to note that a good percentage of the women in the class might just find great satisfaction in their future as being mothers and homemakers, either in place of or in addition to what their last four years of study prepared them to be. (Liberal TV commentators didn’t like that he even suggested women consider the life as a mother and home maker might be equally as good as a life in the commercial world.)

• Birds: I can’t forget the birds. The bird sounds are great this Spring. I don’t know if it is greater than any other Spring, but those birds sure add their voices to this kind Spring weather we’re having.

Don’t know if that is of interest to anyone, but I’m glad to see “Spring.”

The “L” Club . . .

I try to be careful when I write something about the past. My memory is not always the greatest. However, this past weekend a memory came back of events of 40 to 50 years ago.

The earthly remains of Lorene Friend were interred in the Sacred Heart parish cemetery, next to her husband, Robert Friend. One of the memories I had about Lorene was that she was a member of that “L” Club. (Now, that was my name for a group of ladies. I don’t know if anyone else used the name.)

Back in those days, several women of the community got together weekly (or maybe it was monthly) to go to one of the neighboring towns to play bingo, stop for a drink and bite to eat and enjoy life. I’m not sure how many there were but many of them had first names that began with the letter “L.”

The numbers in the group changed from time to time, but in general, the group included: Lorene Friend, Louise Ostdiek, Lenora Pohlmeier, Lillian Brockman, Leona Schroer, Irene Himmelberg  and most likely others, whose names I do not remember at this time. I suspect many of the current residents of Lawrence are not familiar with the names and that I’m showing my age in mentioning them.

I know of other social groups that went bowling or played cards, I just remember this one for the abundance of ladies with names starting with “L.”

Whatever happens in the political world through the rest of the year 2024, may just mark the year as that memorable year, 1968.

So far, it seems the two years, 1968 and 2024 might just be twins.

For those of you who don’t remember 1968, it was the year the Democratic Political Party took a turn to the liberal faction of the Party. They have not turned back since that time.

The year 1968 will be remembered mostly by the violent riots that took place at the Democratic National Convention. In hindsight, it seems organized groups were behind the riots as they wanted to change American society to a more liberal venue, and the way they wanted to do it was with street riots and confusion in American society.

Consider 2024 for a minute. In 1968, liberals rioted for their opposition to the Viet Nam war, in 2024, riots are happening because of the war in Israel and Hamas. Both years saw violent protest on college grounds that led to commencements being cancelled among other changes desired by the protestors.

In 1968 the liberal element in the U. S. used the Democratic Party to start their effort to install a Socialistic society in America.

It is interesting to note that this liberal element, in 1968, was successful in convincing the national media of their moral stance, but failed to convince the national public who stood with the police and the government who stood for law and order.

In 2024, the national media seems to side with the ‘protests’ against the war in the Mid-East, but the national public supports Israel who is fighting the war because of the fact that so many of its citizens were killed on Oct. 7, 2023.

The same “liberal” element in America is using a “war” to again make changes in America society. They have not stopped since 1968, even if they lost that presidential election. They see the same opportunity they had in 1968.

The Democratic “liberal” faction continues their effort and they have the money and knowledge to pay for these “protests” and attempt changes in any way they can.

Not all Democrats are included in this liberal element and a person has to be careful when considering who they want to vote for in the coming election. I would caution against voting Democrat for any elected position, no matter what the elected office unless you know the person’s views very well.

Finally we come to another sure sign of Spring. The college baseball season is almost over. The Nebraska Huskers ended up in second place and is the number two seed at the conference tournament. They start what we hope is a good run in the tournament Tuesday.

Say a prayer that they play good enough to win as many game as possible.
