Ready or not here comes May! I don’t know where April went, but it’s gone. It’s always a busy month. It’s time to be getting a vegetable garden planted, clean out and start up the water fountain, mow grass and mow again. Then there is my favorite May duty. That’s making trips to my favorite local flower-garden centers to shop for the flowers I hope to get planted in my prepared flower beds. It’s time to be neglectful to my house cleaning duties. It’s time to put on my straw hat and gardening gloves and get to digging in the worked soil. The patio furniture is pulled out and cleaned up for a future BBQ, outdoor meal. Patio lights are hung. Hopefully the strong winds will calm down. New wind chimes that were gifted at Christmas are hung and its musical notes begin to ring out. Last but not least, my garden shed needs cleaning but only after my flowers are planted.
The trees are decked out in full display of their leaves, the grass is green and growing. Praises that recent rains arrived and cleaned everything off. Another benefit of the rain was the wheat fields greened up and look promising. Action is beginning to be seen and heard in the rural area. Cattle are being worked, loaded and moved from the home pastures and lots to the summer pastures. With the lack of rains, the ponds are low. In fact, some water is already being hauled to the pasture tanks. Some fields are being sprayed and fertilized, preparing to plant the fall crops. A while back, pasture fences were checked before the cattle could be moved. There is always cedar trees in the pastures that need to be clipped or sawed down.
It feels like May as temperatures warm but it seems that the Kansas winds still thinks it’s March as it continues to blow. With the time change, it’s staying lighter outside longer, and it extends the outdoor work time. After months of winter inactive time, muscles are being used more and it certainly feels like it.
It’s a bust time for sure but it’s my favorite time of the year!
