Nebraska Unicameral adjourned Thursday

On Thursday, April 18, – the 60th and final day for the 2024 regular session of the Nebrsaka Legislature– senators passed several bills, including a package of tax credits for various items and a bill appropriating state dollars for private school scholarships

In a bit of a surprising move, the legislature avoided taking votes on a high-profile property tax relief proposal and a bill increasing the documentary stamp tax, which resulted in both measures failing to have an opportunity to pass before adjournment.

The decision not to vote on the property tax relief plan that would have included the collection of new sales taxes on previously exempt items was met with a proclamation from the governor during his closing remarks to the legislature that he will “call as many special sessions as it takes”

By the numbers, this year was a return to regular business in the Nebraska Legislature, particularly in light of last year’s unusual session bogged down with filibusters. According to Speaker John Arch, 597 bills were introduced in 2024 and 390 passed into law. As of this writing, the Governor had vetoed one bill, but the slate of bills passed into law last Thursday had not yet been signed or vetoed.
