Judith “Judie” Anne (Sykes) Prentiss died on Saturday, April 6, 2024, in Stroms- burg, Nebraska, at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 12 days. Judie was the oldest of two children of Clarence and Lorraine (Wall) Sykes. She was born on Jan. 27, 1945, at Superior, Nebraska.
After graduating Ruskin High School, she attended business school in Fairbury, Nebraska.
In 1967, Judie married Jack Prentiss at the United Methodist Church in Nora, Nebraska. To this union one son was born. Soon after Russell was born, Judie decided to pursue a degree in nursing at Mary Mount in Salina, Kansas. Through the years as a registered nurse, Judie worked many different roles in many different facilities. Some of which was working on the floor to being a director of nursing. One of her last positions was being a nursing instructor at Kaplan University in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Judie enjoyed many things. If she wasn’t at work you could often find her working on her latest sewing project, reading a book or cooking for friends and family.
In later years, her focus shifted when her granddaughter, Alyse, was born. As she grew up, Judie was busy attending her extra-curricular activities which included horse shows and other sporting events. Judie enjoyed every minute with her.
She entered the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg in January of 2023 because of her health.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Lorraine Sykes; husband, Jack; her son, Russell Prentiss; and sister, Georgia (Arthur) Hickman.
Survivors include her granddaughter, Alyse Carlson (Andrew Henely) of Fairmont, Nebraska; niece Abby Hickman of York, Nebraska; step children, Jack Prentiss Jr. and Theresa Prentiss of Leakesville Mississippi; daughter-in-law, Margie Prentiss of Fairmont, Nebraska; step-grandchildren, Dustin and Corillian Frank of Missouri; Shane Bennett of Nebraska; step-great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Chairise and Jenna Bennett of Nebraska; nephews, Jeff Hickman of Denver, Colorado; James (Emily) O’ Rourke of Norfolk, Virginia; John O’Rourke of Hastings, Nebraska; Phillip Bruning of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Ben (Loretta) Bruning of Zuni, Virginia; and along with other step- great-grandchildren, relatives and a host of friends.
Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 12, from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Nebraska, with Pastor Justin Smith officiating.
Recorded songs will be “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” “In the Garden,” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”
Visitation is today (Thursday) from 4 to 8 p.m. with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m.
Pallbearers will be James O’Rourke, Jeff Hickman, Phillip Bruning, Todd Mazour, Michael Kaiser and Jeremiah Bennett. Honorary pallbearers will be John O’Rourke, Ben Bruning and Andrew Henely.
Interment will be in the Spring Creek Cemetery, Ruskin, Nebraska.
