Water that contains lead can damage a developing brain. It is especially harmful for children six and under. In adults, lead can increase blood pressure. With your help, your utility can reduce elevated levels of lead in your community. Your water system regularly tests for lead levels, but as you know, the source of lead in drinking water is often found in lead pipes and plumbing components in your home. Drinking water for your home is delivered from the water main to your home by a service line. Service lines can contain lead. Identifying homes with lead service lines or lead components is crucial because corrosion of these materials over time can cause lead to accumulate in your drinking water.
To remain in compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, all public water systems must develop a Lead Service Line Inventory by Oct. 16, 2024. The City of Nelson would like the homeowner's cooperation with this inventory. A leaflet was sent out last week to inform homeowners of how to locate their service line, and how to determine whether or not their line is lead. By answering a few questions and returning the survey, you will protect your family's health and help your utility identify the drinking water service line materials in the community.
If you are unable to locate your service line or you are unsure of the material the pipe is composed of the city will make arrangements for someone to come to your home and inspect your line. Please return completed surveys to City of Nelson, PO Box 327, Nelson Nebraska 68961.
