Commissioners look at crowning and graveling selected county roads

The Jewell County commissioners met Monday, Feb. 12. Commissioners Keith Roe, Ed Duskie and Brent Beck were present. MacKinzie Kohler, deputy county clerk, was present for the meeting.

Amanda Davis, register of deeds told the commissioners she would like to purchase two new computers and four monitors for her office, as their current computers are getting slow. She would also like to purchase a new desktop Fujitsu scanner to replace the current flatbed scanner which they do not need or use and would like to change to something smaller that does not take up as much space. She also said she would like to keep one of the old computers to use as an additional public station, and the rest will be advertised for sale in the newspaper. Amanda presented three quotes for the following amounts: from Dell - $4,573.03, Newegg.com - $4,309.18, and Best Buy - $4,232.48. The commissioners accepted the quote from New Egg.

She also asked the commissioners for their opinions on the idea of creating an office policy that states she will not help customers fill out deeds in order to protect the county, as she is not technically qualified to do this, and does not want to encounter any issues if something went wrong with a deed. The commissioners agreed this would be a good idea and recommended that Amanda consult with the county attorney about creating a policy.

She informed the commissioners the recording program they use in her office is quite high in price and continues to go up in price. This is usually paid for in part out of the register of deeds tech fund, and the rest out of general. She said this year her budget will be able to cover it, but asked if in the following year the general fund can cover what she does not have the budget for. The commissioners advised Amanda that it should be okay, and to revisit when it is time to pay the bill next year.

The commissioners approved the Revised Employment Rules and Regulations for the Jewell County Courthouse and Elected Officials.

Joel Elkins, general superintendent, discussed maintenance. The commissioners expressed desire to attempt making plans to repair FAS roads to help minimize road complaints. They would like a crown put on these roads and look into putting gravel on them. The commissioners said that during snow removal the operators are to clean the end of driveway so residents can get in and out of the property. They also discussed the possibility of a hiring part time motor grader operator to help cover the area that was previously maintained by employees that have now retired, until a full-time employee can be hired.
