For three quarters, the Lawrence-Nelson boys basketball team had a place at the state championship within their grasp. They led the Sumner-Eddyville-Miller Mustangs 39-35 going into the fourth quarter at the game at Sumner Saturday. Then it all fell apart. The Mustangs held the Raiders to one point, from a free throw, while scoring 13, to eke out a 46-40 win.
The Raiders earned their place at the D2-3 district final by sweeping their D2-2 subdistrict bracket at Nelson. They downed Harvard 49-15 Tuesday. They edged Red Cloud 27-25 Thursday to advance to the district final.
The Raiders ended the season with a 13-11 record.
For seniors Bayln Bargen, Clay Williams and Connor Janda, it was the final game of their high school careers.
