Rehab or Rebuild

On Feb. 20, Nuckolls County Commissioners met with the public twice, once after the regular meeting and again in the evening, to answer questions concerning the rehab of the current building or the possibility of a new building. A handful of folks turned up for the morning meeting and around 20 residents made it in the evening.

The only new news to report is that a guesstimate of $10 million was made for the renovation of the current building. I say guesstimate because without opening up the walls to see what horrors they may or may not contain is an unknown factor. If renovated, it is thought the whole building would have to be brought up to code, including making the entire building handicap accessible.

I believe the question is not whether something needs to be done, but more to the tone of what can we afford to do without bankrupting the county. So the question is, how are we going to pay for this, whatever that may be, and how will it affect the citizens of Nuckolls County? Another meeting has been set for 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 29) at the Superior Auditorium.

I hope to see you there.
