Nuckolls County residents will have another opportunity this evening (Thursday) to discuss the dilemma surrounding the Nuckolls County Courthouse. The old building if full of history but it has several costly problems that need to be addressed. Should it be repaired or a new one built?
The county commissioners have scheduled a meeting for 6:30 p.m. today at the Superior Auditorium.
As it isn’t an official county board meeting, only two of the three commissioners are allowed by state law to attend. Other county officials will attend and present information on what the current historic building requires in the way of repairs and modernization to comply with current codes and needs as well information on the possible construction of a new courthouse. There will be time provided for county residents to ask questions and present their opinions.
Since soon after the county was organized in the Oak area in 1872, the courthouse has been located in Nelson. The present courthouse building was constructed in 1890.
