Douglas “Doug” Woods, 73, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024, at the Columbus Community Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Father Joe Miksch officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Hartman Post 84.
Douglas Vincent Woods was born on April 29, 1950, in Manchester, New Hampshire, to Clarence and Jeanne (Privey) Woods. He grew up in Dedham, Massachusetts, and graduated from Dedham High School in 1968. Doug entered the United States Air Force in 1969 and served during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in 1973. He moved to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1970. On May 27, 1972, Doug was united in marriage to Linda Kohmetscher in Lawrence, Nebraska. The couple moved to Platte Center, Nebraska, in 1975 and to Columbus in 1979. Doug received his associate degree from Platte College in Columbus in 1981. He worked at Gerhold Concrete for more than 20 years and at Camaco for 11 years. He was a fan of the Boston Red Sox, Husker football and volleyball, and taking road trips to wineries.
Doug had a fantastic sense of humor, and a way with words and witticism that left his family and those who loved him filled with laughter. He and Linda, Kelli and Kevin spent countless hours competing in family favorite games like Scrabble, Upwords and Bones. Good-natured but heated competition to answer the most questions while watching Jeopardy, to solve the Wheel of Fortune puzzles, place the closest bid during Price is Right, and to be the first to figure out the Daily Word Jumble were constant at home.
Doug is survived by his wife: Linda Woods of Columbus, Nebraska; daughter, Kelli Woods of Lincoln, Nebraska:
son, Kevin Woods of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother: Roger (Marie) Woods of Norwood, Massachusetts; brothers and sisters in law: Dick and Marge Kohmetscher of Lawrence, Nebraska; Clyde and Susan (Kohmetscher) Schulte of Omaha, Nebraska; Dale and Julie (Kohmetscher) Bonifas of Juniata, Nebraska; Carl Kohmetscher of Hastings, Nebraska; Paul and Michelle Kohmetscher of Lawrence, Nebraska; and Kevin and Jane (Kohmetscher) Bruntz of Hastings, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and -nephews
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Jeanne Woods;
and sister-in-law, OkHa Kohmetscher.
