New radar arrives, nabs 12 speeders on Monday

If you have a lead foot and are prone to speeding, the City of Superior has a new tool which may help you break your addiction to speed.

The Superior Police Department has placed into operation new speed measuring radar equipment. The equipment became operational on Friday and by Monday 17 violators had been apprehended. Twelve of those stops were made on Monday.

Many were related to Highway 81 traffic that was detoured through Superior. One driver was clocked at 62 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone.

In other police department related news, Wilber Young, the department’s chief, discuss a potential a stray animal problem with the mayor and city council on Monday evening.

Young said with the arrival of spring he expects to have more stray dogs roaming the community and the department no longer has a pound for holding captured animals. The city has been using Kile Veterinary Service for pound service, however, the Kile business has relenquised its kennel licence and will no longer provide kennel service.

Monday’s council meeting was a short one, lasting less than 30 minutes. As has been the case, at least the last three meetings, the council lacked enough members to vote on proposed ordinance changes. Members James Flores and Darrel Brandt were absent Monday.

It was reported Nuckolls County had shared a portion of the federal ARPA money with the county rescue squads. The council approved using Superior’s $15,000 allocation to purchase materials needed to outfit the new ambulance which is expected to arrive in late March.

The council approved the sale of a vacant city owned property at 555 N Commercial to Beverly Beavers. The price for the two and one half city lots will be reduced if a new house is constructed there within two years. The

The resignation of Larry Sibert as gas department foreman was accepted. The city will advance a current department employee to the foreman’s position and recruit a new entry level employee. Sibert has been with the gas department for 35 years and 27 as foreman. His resignation will be effective July 31,
