Chuck Tuttle and Vince Walton hold the quilt of valor presented to Marlin Cox who is accompanied by his wife, Donna Cox, at Parkview Haven in Deshler.
Nelson Post 187 Legionnaires Chuck Tuttle, Vince Walton, Max VanSkiver; Auxiliary members DeAnna Tuttle and Donna Cox (Marlin's wife), quilt creator Barb Harris-Sole, and members from the Deshler Legion Post, along with Parkview Haven staff, participated in a presentation ceremony honoring Veteran Marlin Cox held at Parkview Haven in Deshler. The ceremony explains that the quilt brings a 3-part message: honor, freedom and comfort. Each stitch represents the love and gratitude of the maker and thanks for the service to our country.
Marlin is a U.S. Army veteran who served 1953 to 56, achieving the rank of corporal. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Nuckolls County to operate the family farm. He married his wife, Donna, in 1957. They raised their son and two daughters on the farm, where they resided for 49 years. They then moved to their current home in Nelson. Marlin was an active member of Nelson Post 187 who assisted at military funerals, memorial activities and other Legion events until health issues made him unable to do so.
The quilt presented to Marlin was designed, sewn and donated by Barb Harris-Sole who has many ties to the Nelson area and is especially interested in honoring the veterans in this locality. She has sewn innumerable quilts in the past and is now preparing to provide additional quilts to veterans in this area.
