5-year roads plan includes 4 local highway projects
Five Nuckolls County projects are included in the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s highway improvement plan introduced earlier this month,
None of the projects are scheduled for completion in the 2024 construction season but they are in the plan for completion in the following 5-year time plan.
The plans are often termed the 1 and 6. Project in the one year portion are pretty certain but projects in the next five years are less certain.
The longest of the projects is the 15.32 mile resurfacing of Highway 14 from the north edge of Nelson to the Deweese Spur.
Two projects involve Highway 4. That highway is to be resurfaced in two hitches from the Webster County line to Davenport.
The fourth project is the resurfacing of the 5.2 mile Oak Spur.
Thirteen miles of Highway 136 are to be resurfaced east and west of Ruskin,
In addition to the resurfacing, some bridge work is also included in the plans.
In Clay County resurfacing of the Ong and Deweese spurs and Highway 41 from Clay Center to the Fillmore County line are in the plan.
Thayer County projects planed for the 2024 fiscal year include the resurfacing of Highway 136 from the Nuckolls County line east 14.3 miles. The five-year plan calls for resurfacing Highway 8 from the Jefferson County line west to Highway 81, Highway 4 from Davenport east 13 miles and Highway 5 from Deshler north 11 miles.
In Webster County, the five year plan includes resurfacing Highway 78, from Guide Rock north 14 miles, Two projects are planned for Highway 281 at Red Cloud. One is within the community and one involves a bridge south of the community.
A local disappointment is the addition of turning lanes on Highway 8 near the Aurora Cooperative’s Superior East elevator are not shown on the plans.
