Following a weekend fire, a young Superior couple is without a home and their possessions.
Firemen were called about 12:50 Saturday afternoon to 1104 N. Park after a motorist saw smoke pouring from the house. Jasper Butler and Rhiannan Pierce were in the house but asleep at the time and unaware an electrical system failure in the bathroom-kitchen area had apparently started the fire.
Thanks to the alert from the motorists, all occupants and pets were able to escape the fire unharmed.
Twenty-three members of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene about three hours.
About 5 a.m. Sunday, the firemen were called back to the same location. The fire had rekindled and the house appeared to be totally engulfed when the first truck arrived.
About the same number of firefighters as Saturday were on the scene another three hours on Sunday.
While the temperatures were not in the sub-zero category as they sometimes are during the winter, ice was a problem. As they worked, the fire fighters' gear was soon covered in ice. One fireman said his helmet had so much ice on it that it felt like it weighed 50 pounds.
Sunday afternoon sightseers driving past the remains of the house observed trees coated in ice.
Sunday morning the Casey's store provided breakfast pizza for the fire fighters.
The house was owned by Britini Lovegrove.
A Go-Fund-Me account has been opened to assist Jasper Butler and Rhiannan Pierce.
