Open letter to all

Today was a truly heartwarming day for me and I want to share with you the inspiring actions of young people I witnessed.

After a church service that included many messages of thanksgiving, hubby and I motored to Hastings for lunch and to pick up a few needed items. Two young men, probably in their very early 20s, were seated across from us at lunch, and I could not help but overhear a portion of their conversation. One young man was recounting that he had changed his lifestyle and did not connect with many of his old friends, but that he never felt alone since he embraced Christianity.

The other was quiet at first, but then began to open up about his own life and hopes for the future. I did not consciously try to listen in and while I of course did not hear most of their conversation, I could not help but be impressed but what I heard. What a great example of witness and helpfulness!

Later, while placing my items on the conveyor at Walmart, I was lifting a heavy container of cat litter (not the only item I purchased for our spoiled cat), dropped it and some litter spilled out on the floor. The two young men behind me immediately picked it up for me, placed the container and my other items on the conveyor belt and moved the cart for me. While I was apologizing to the cashier and offering to clean up the litter, the two young men, one of whom had a slight Hispanic accent, magically appeared with a broom and dustpan, cleaned it up, and put my purchased items in the cart for transport to the car.

In this day and age, when we read in the news of the less than nice actions of some young people of all races, it is important to remember that most are fine, upstanding citizens and a credit to their families and our country. The students and other young people in our community are especially respectful and kind, and I just want to thank them for helping to make our town and county one of the best places in the world to live.
