SPS Students honor our brave defenders

On Friday, Superior Public Schools presented their annual Veterans Day Program, starting with a Veterans Day breakfast spread at 8 o'clock in the high school library. John Whetzal, superintendent, gave a heartfelt opening statement about family members in the armed forces and his deep appreciation for those protecting this country.

Several students greeted veterans with coffee and then served them fruits, egg casseroles and sweets. Shortly after this, students, faculty, veterans and family filed into the gymnasium to see students sing patriotic songs and read poetry.

The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Color Guard presented the colors and everyone rose to their feet to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The Superior High School Band played the National Anthem.

Teegan Duncan read a Veterans Day poem from the podium before the kindergarten through second grade students sang I love My Country. The third and fourth graders sang American Tears and the fifth graders performed God Bless the USA with instruments. Nadia McMeen and Ashleigh Primus read When you See a Soldier and A Nation's Strength respectively.

Madison Heusinkvelt read Veterans Day Tribute. The high school choir performed America, Of Thee I sing. In Flanders Fields was read by Cayce Barry before Principal Jennifer Cady had all of the veterans in the audience stand to be saluted and appreciated. The Superior High School Drill Team performed a routine to God Bless The USA.

Superintendent John Whetzal gave a closing statement thanking our veterans for their service and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Color Guard retired the colors, closing out the program. Shortly after, veterans were served drinks and cookies sponsored by the Superior Auditorium.
