Even though they didn’t qualify any runners for the state meet, the Rock Hills High School cross country team can consider the season a resounding success. Fielding a cross country team for the first time, the team held their own against schools with well-established programs. Several of the team members had no distance running experience prior to the season yet they did not allow that to deter them. Patience, practice and persistence paid off and bodes well for the future in this grueling sport.
The team competed at the 1A regional meet at Sabetha Saturday.
The boys team finished in sixth place, with 153 points, in the 10-team field of St. John’s, Axtell, Northern Heights, Olpe, Clifton-Clyde, Solomon, Washington County, Centralia and Bishop Seabury Academy.
Hannah Simmelink finished her final race in Rock Hills colors in 25th place in the girls 5K race with her time of 23:53.42 in the 68 runner field.
