Mankato City Council approve proposed 2024 budget

A special meeting of the Mankato City Council was called to order by President Sam Becker on Oct. 10. Councilmen present were: Sam Becker, Lyle Dauner, Rodney Payne and Kevin Ost. George Hennion was present via Zoom. Mayor Justin Schoonover arrived after the meeting had started. Also present were Darrell Miller, city attorney, and Sharon McCormick, interim city clerk. Visitors present were Shelby Dennard and Anthony Roy.

The purpose of the meeting was to consider the proposed budget for 2024, interview a candidate for the position of city administrator and discuss a request from the Mankato Chamber of Commerce to close a portion of Commercial Street for a downtown Christmas celebration.

The proposed 2024 budget was approved.

Councilmen approved to allow the closing of Commercial Street from Jefferson Street south to Main Street from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 24, with the Christmas Tree remaining at the City Park.

The council went into executive session for an interview with non-elected personnel. When the open meeting resumed, no formal action was taken.

The council decided to have another special meeting at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 17, for action on the applications for the position of Mankato city administrator.
