Shooters compete in Nebraska Youth Smallbore Silhouette Invitational

Lawrence-Nelson area students competed in the Nebraska Youth Smallbore Silhouette Invitational on Sept. 30, at the Pressey Wildlife Management Area near Oconto. It is a free competition, open to all youth ages 11 and older who have successfully completed the Hunter Education course and have not yet graduated from high school. The event was established in 1977, and has earned the title "Longest Running Youth Shooting Sports Event in Nebraska."

Seventy students competed in this year's main event, as well as three more in the Stars & Stripes event for those too young for Hunter Education certification.

The local students have competed for the last three years and have placed each year. Shooters practice on their own. Angela Menke is the sponsor. There is no coach for the group and it is not school related.

Three of the L-N students are involved in the Rep Valley 4-H Trap. Targets are silhouettes of chickens, pigs and turkeys that students shot at from different distances.

Second place school team: Grayhm Beck, Kaden Grams, Owen Smiley and Nathan Stokes

First place iron sights: Grayhm Beck
