Raider Football battle Silver Lake for Homecoming Victory

Every football game pretty much produces its own theme. The game last Friday night, for the L-N Homecoming celebration had the theme of a battle. The game had all the ingredients: losses, gains, outstanding plays, suffering, unexpected situations, etc.

The game could be divided by halves, the first half Silver Lake had the upper hand in this battle. They had three outstanding kick-off returns, scoring after two of them. They scored on five of their six possessions, scoring first in the game and held a 28-22 lead at half time. L-N scored on three of six possessions and gave up possession twice with a fumble and interception.

In the second half, the Raider defense found a way to be the decisive factor in the game. They held Silver Lake almost motionless giving up only one long play and allowing SL to score only twice on seven possession forcing four punts and a fumble. Meanwhile, L-N's offense scored on seven of eight possession, gaining their first lead in the game on their first TD of the 3rd period.

One of the more interesting events of the game came in the second period after SL picked up a nine point, 25-16 lead. Things maybe couldn't look worse for the Raiders. They mishandled the SL kickoff and started on their own five yard line a 90 yard scoring drive. Yes, we all know the 8-Man football field is only 80 yards long, but to make the game interesting, the Raiders were called for two penalties resulting in them reclaiming the same ground twice.

The Raider's second half defense complimented the second half offense. The offense scored on 7 of 8 possession, but the defense held SL to only 72 yards on 33 possession discounting on play that resulted in a 76 yard run and a TD.

120 points between the two teams is not a record, however, it is a lot of points. L-N's scoring came as follows:

Quarter No. 1: (TD No. 1) Trailing 0-14, L-N put together an 8 play, 68 yard drive and started their scoring with a 25 yard pass from Connor Janda to Nolan Ostdiek. Janda ran the PAT, 8-14. SL kicked a field goal before the end of the period. Score: 8-17.

Quarter No. 2 (TD No. 2) L-N started a 50 yard scoring drive in the first period, and ended it in the second period when Janda scored on a 4 yard run and also score the PAT: 16-17.

(TD No. 3) L-N's defense held SL to a punt, but then gave the ball back via a SL interception. After a SL score, L/N generated that 90 yard scoring drive, resulting in a three yard Janda run. PAT failed: 22-25.

Quarter No. 3: (TD No. 4) L-N started this period with the ball and it didn't take long for the Raiders to play a different ball game. On the first offensive play, Clay Williams raced 35 yards on an 'end-around' play and three plays later Janda scored on a ten yard run. He also ran the PAT: 30-28.

(TD No. 5) Clay Williams intercepted a SL pass and two plays later Janda raced 36 yard to score and then passed the PAT to Nolan Ostdiek: 38-28.

(TD No. 6) Silver Lake put together a 12 play scoring drive and L-N responded with a four play, 45 yard scoring drive with Janda covering the final 10 yards for the TD and also running the PAT: 46-36.

Quarter No. 4: (TD No. 7) Janda scored on another ten yard run on the second play of this period and then passed on the PAT to Clay Williams. 54-36.

(TD No. 8) The L-N defense forced a SL punt and on the second play, Janda connected with Jack Williams on a pass and run play covering 44 yards. The PAT was a J. Williams run: 62-36.

(TD No. 9) The Raider defense blocked a SL punt and on the second Raider play, backup quarterback, Carter Griffis found a little hole in the SL defense and raced untouched 25 yards to score. The PAT failed: 68-36.

(TD No. 10) After SL scored on a 76 yard run, the team exchanged fumbles before Caden Culbertson found running room for a 28 yard TD run. Ace Wulf ran the PAT to end all scoring in the game: 76-44.
