Notice of Resignation of Jewell County Attorney

Earlier this week, Alexandria Pierce, the first term county attorney, submitted a letter of resignation effective Jan. 1. Her letter follows.

Pursuant to K.S.A. 19-2606, I am writing to tender my resignation as County Attorney, effective Jan. 1, 2024. I have accepted a position as an officer in the United States Army JAG Corps and will begin Officer Basic Training at Ft. Benning, Georgia, this coming January.

Although Federal Law prohibits the involuntary termination of military personnel upon receiving an order requiring leave, I feel my resignation would best serve the interests of Jewell County and have therefore elected that option.

I have had extensive conversation with Scott D. Wright of Beloit, Kansas, and he is willing and prepared to serve the remainder of my term as Temporary County Attorney upon nomination by the Republican Committee and appointment by the Governor pursuant to K.S.A. 19-715. Mr. Wright is an experienced prosecutor who has served in the roles of county attorney and county counselor. He has provided services as special prosecutor for Jewell County in cases where conflicts of interest prevented my appearance; therefore, is knowledgeable of the expectations and procedures of our judges and clerks. I believe he would serve Jewell County well, if so appointed.

In anticipation of the vacancy of my position and subsequent transition, I will be appointing Mr. Wright as assistant county attorney pursuant to Attorney General Opinion 83~65 to provide legal assistance when necessary, at an hourly rate to be billed by Mr. Wright and tendered from the County Attorney’s fund.

Alexandria D. Pierce

Jewell County Attorney

A native of Jewell County, Pierce was elected to her first term in 2020.
