SHS football falls short in 26-20 loss to Heartland

So close yet so far away. That was the theme for the Superior Wildcats, Friday, as they played the Heartland Community Huskies in a rare afternoon game.

The Wildcats fell 26-20 in a closely fought game. Superior was looking for its first win of the season and they had ample opportunities to make that happen.

Unfortunately for Superior, several untimely penalties and some sloppy ball handling made their comeback effort unsuccessful.

Both teams played a a scoreless first quarter with the defenses coming out strong for both teams.

The Huskies scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 12-0 lead. Lincoln Sander broke free and was off on a 62 yard touchdown jaunt to close the gap to 12-6 after the Wildcat two-point conversion was unsuccessful.

The Wildcats tied the game early in the third quarter when Sander took off on a 43 yard sprint to the Heartland end zone. A failed two-point conversion attempt left the teams tied at 12.

The Huskies wasted little time in answering call as they rattled off two touchdowns to head into the fourth quarter with a 26-12 lead.

Sander finished off a down field drive with a seven yard run into the end zone. Kyler Boyles was successful with the two-point conversion as the Wildcats pulled within six points, 26-20, of Heartland. Unfortunately, it was the last gasp for Superior as the Heartland defense stiffened to keep Superior winless.

Sander completed six of his nine pass attempts for 62 yards. He had one pass intercepted.

Colten Butler reeled in one pass for 27 yards. Boyles made two receptions for 15 yards. Theo Mathis had one reception for 12 yards. Dayne Clark had an eight yard reception.

Sander carried the ball 18 times covering 22 yards. He scored three touchdowns. Boyles took the ball 15 times to cover 19 yards. He had a fumble. Butler carried the ball twice for 10 yards and he had a fumble after a pass reception. Clark picked up four yards with his single carry. Caiden Smullins had four carries for one yard.

Boyles led the defense with five solo tackles and five assisted tackles. Mathis accounted for five solo tackles and three assisted tackles. Sander collected four solo tackles. Clark contributed four solo tackles and four assisted tackles. Smullins produced three solo tackles and three assisted tackles. Christian Osweiller manufactured two solo tackles and five assisted tackles. Butler added two solo tackles and two assisted tackles. Dane Miller listed three assisted tackles while Ja’cobey Beck had one assisted tackle.

Superior travels to McCool Junction for a game with the 1-5 Mustangs. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m. Friday.
