5 fire departments respond to hay fires

Friday was a busy day for area fire departments. The departments at Superior, Guide Rock, Lawrence and Nelson all responded to calls for assistance.

The Guide Rock and Lawrence departments were called to a baler fire. Nelson and Superior responded to hay fires.

When it comes to hay fires, the Superior fire was a minor one.

Hay was being ground for Matt Bargen north of the cement terminal west of Superior.

While the hay grinding process was underway, workers noticed smoke coming from the hay. They weren't sure if it was steam or from a fire and began to move the suspected hay. They were able put out the fire without assistance.

The fire department was asked take a grass rig to the scene and wet down the hay to make sure the fire was out. The loss was limited.

Saturday afternoon the department was called to the Jason Ray farm about one mile north of Superior and one mile east of Highway 14 to battle a hayloft fire.

The loft in a livestock pole shed contained both hay and straw. While the cause has not been determined, it likely was electrical.

Uncertain, what they might encounter, the Superior department called for mutual aid from the Hardy and Nelson departments. However, the assistance was not needed.

While a damage estimate was not available Tuesday morning, the shed is thought to be repairable. Some rafters and tin will likely need to be replaced.
