It’s been great weather so far this fall. Most of us received much needed rain over a week ago and everything is greening up. The temperatures have been just right to get outside and do some fall work, or just to enjoy the day. The evenings are cooling off and the air conditioner is sometimes not needed which will make it easier reading the electric bill when it arrives.
I remember those early fall days years ago rushing home from school. Climbing out of our school’s Jeep bus and making a run for the house. Mother would usually have one of her delicious cinnamon rolls waiting for us, or some doughnuts or long johns purchased from the traveling bakery. As I remember, this traveling bakery was out of Webber. A gentleman would go farmhouse to farmhouse selling his treats. Perhaps others remember this traveling bakery.
After the snack, my sister and I would head outside to play before supper time. We’d head for the lots where our ponies were kept and we’d play with them for a while. There was always the concrete stock tank filled to the brim with water and big goldfish. We’d watch the fish swim around. Sometimes we’d opt to walk into the home pasture and see what the crawdad’s were doing near the pond. There was always something to do outside when the weather was nice. Cell phones or electronic tablets were not available so we did not keep our eyes glued to social media or electronic games.
When we’d see father drive the pick up or tractor into the drive way, we would know it was time to think about getting to the house for supper. Then we’d hear mother’s yell that supper was ready. Homework was done after supper but it seemed while attending our country school, there was hardly any homework called for. After dark, if there wasn’t anything my sister and I were interested in watching on the black and white television, we’d head upstairs where we had our own playroom. We’d play with our dolls until mother called for us to get ready for bed.
Life seemed to much simpler back then. Maybe because it was!
