Mankato Chamber members discuss Christmas events

Eleven members attended the September Mankato Chamber of Commerce meeting on Sept. 13, at Bob’s.

President Jason Ortman called the meeting to order.

The Community Garden is winding down for the season. Brian Shulda talked about the possibilities of planting cover crops in the garden in the future.

The chamber discussed the community birthday calendars. Not including the chamber’s listings, there were 487 listings turned in and 123 calendars pre ordered. Haley will work on setting the calendars and collecting advertisements from businesses so that the calendars can be printed.

The Garage Sale Mall took place during the Highway 36 Treasure Hunt at the city building on Sept. 14 through 16. Eight of the 12 booths were rented this year. The mall was open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The chamber paid the city $225 for using the building plus a $150 deposit. Members will set up the Garage Sale Mall at 5 p.m. last Wednesday.

The chamber discussed Downtown Trick-or-Treat. Trick-or-Treat will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The chamber will also host the Pumpkin Decorating Contest. This year there will be two age groups: 10 and below and 11 and up. There will be a first and second place prize as well as a reward for all the participants. The chamber will further discuss this event at the October meeting.

There are no changes to be made to the scholarship application this year. Scholarship applications will be sent to the school.

The chamber discussed the Christmas events that take place in Mankato. Dana Austin sent a video and timeline of ideas to improve the “Christmas in Mankato” event that takes place every year. Dana will be contacted about having a meeting to work together in assisting each other with planning the event this year. An email will be sent to all members with the details of a meeting for anyone who might want to help plan the event.

The next meeting will take place Oct. 11 at the Senior Center.
