Country Roads

Where did the summer go? In just a few days, autumn will arrive. You’d think with this summer being so hot and with a lack of rain, it would seem like summer drug by but for some of us, it somehow flew by.

Autumn arrives with football and volleyball games, bon fires along with wiener roasts, tasty s’mores, pumpkins, apple pies baking, leaves turning colors and falling to the ground, cooler days and nights and colorful mum flowers blooming. There are golden brown fields full of milo, stalks of ripened corn, golden soybean fields and combines working to start the fall harvesting. Bales are brought in and stacked ready to feed the livestock for this winter. Squirrels can be seen hurrying up a tree storing away their stash that will keep them and their family feed over the coming winter months.

Autumn brings memories of starting school. It meant getting a list of needed school books and workbooks. Then going to a local store that had either new books or good used ones to purchase, along with a brand new box of color crayons, Big Chief tablets, pencil sharpener, big erasers, pencil box. But the best purchase was a new lunch box featuring a cowboy movie star, a television star or a cartoon character pictured on the lid. The beginning of school also meant a trip to the nearest hair salon to have a hair trim, a perm, or maybe a new hair style. It was an exciting time of year. The beginning of a new school year usually meant meeting a new teacher, getting together with school friends again, and learning new games to play during the recess time.

Enjoy these autumn days. Hopefully they will stay around for a long time. My least favorite season is coming next..winter!
