It was Friday night lightning at Superior's Brodstone Memorial Field which provided the excitement. Kickoff had been moved from the scheduled 7 p.m to 8 p.m. because of extreme heat conditions. Coaches, school administrators and officials huddled before the game as another threat from Mother Nature appeared in the form of thunderstorms moving in the direction of Superior.
A few rain drops were falling as the Wildcats received the opening kickoff but lightning could be observed in the distance. Lawrence-Nelson jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead in the first quarter. A brilliant explosion of nature's finest white lightning brought the game to a screeching halt as the game was postponed with two minutes remaining in the first period. Lawrence-Nelson led 12-0 at this point.
The decision was made to resume play Saturday morning at 10 a.m. After further consideration kickoff was moved back to 12:30 p.m
The delay did nothing to help Superior as they fell victim to the Raiders 56-18.
The Superior offense again showed sparks of life as they scored three touchdowns. The team picked up 59 yards in the air and 151 on the ground. A leaky defense allowed the Raiders to amass 302 yards on the ground and 157 via the air ways. Lincoln Sander completed two of four passes for 59 yards and one touchdown.
Kyler Boyles pulled in one pass for 24 yards. Dayne Clark converted his lone 35 yard reception into a touchdown.
Sander led the ground attack with 66 yard on 12 carries and one touchdown. Boyles gained 44 yards with his 15 rushes while scoring a touchdown. Colten Butler covered 39 yards with his five rushing efforts.
Boyles nailed down seven solo tackles and three assisted tackles. Butler wrapped up six solo tackles and had six assisted tackles. Sander turned in four solo tackles and an assisted tackle. Clark pulled down four solo tackles and had three assists. Caiden Smullins recorded three solo tackles and 10 assisted tackles. Thomas Mathis claimed a solo tackle and two assisted tackles. Braydon Stevens accounted for a solo tackle and an assist. Juan Arteaga and Lenden Worm collected a solo tackle each. Declan Miller and Justice Sander had an assisted tackle apiece
The Wildcats travel to Shickley, Friday, looking for their first win of the season against the Bruning-Davenport-Shickley Eagles. The class D-2 Eagles won their opening game against High Plains Community 32-0. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
