Mid-day Friday, members of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department responded to a grass fire in the ditch along directly north of the Fifteenth and Montana Street intersection. The heat index was more than 100 degrees with little wind. A dry, drought stricken corn field was all that lay between the fire and several businesses to the north including The Victorian Inn, Good Samaritan, Superior Paint and Body, The Velvet Rose and LandMark Implement. Scott Nondorf, SVFD chief, said, "When firemen arrived, South Central Electric employees and the Superior Police Department were fighting the fire with fire extinguishers. Firemen finished the job and thoroughly dampened the area.
