Conservation tour planned for Sept. 6

Educational afternoon planned in Jewell County

Agriculture producers are encouraged to reserve their spot on the charter bus that will tour Jewell County on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 6. The Soil Health – Conservation Tour will leave 218 Delaware Street (Jewell Community Center) at 1 p.m.

First stop will be at the Robin and Deb Griffeth homestead; 1848 J Road, north of Jewell. There will be information about bee keeping and honey production.

Then on to view brush management and the progress made by using a late summer burn! This is located near the intersection of 10 and U Road along the west side of Jewell County.

The Rain Fall Simulator will be set up at the homestead of Brett and Beth Walker; 2782 50 Road. Local samples of soils from fields with a variety of cropping practices and ground cover will be used to show differences in runoff and percolation.

If you have never seen a rotational grazing chart in use, the fourth stop will be your chance! Rotational grazing of cover crops on farm ground will be the focus of this stop near the intersection of 150 and Ash Road.

The final stop will show two fields with cover crops planted into failed wheat. These fields are near the intersection of 200 and K Road.

The tour expects to return to the Jewell Community Center at approximately 6:30 p.m. A catered meal, prepared by LeRoy Bourbon, Jewell, will be served. There will be information presented and drawings for more than $2,000 in door prizes after the meal.
