The Jewell County Commissioners met July 31. Commissioners Brent Beck, Keith Roe, and Ed Duskie were present. Carla J. Waugh, county clerk, was present for the meeting.
The following were present for the office head meeting and provided an update for their department: Alexandria Pierce, county attorney; Chris Petet, custodian; Anna Porter, county appraiser and Kevin Peroutek, noxious weed director, emergency preparedness director and 911 coordinator; and Cindy Becker, health administrator. Those absent: Amanda Davis, register of deeds; Don Jacobs, sheriff; Nora Rhoades, Post Rock Extension District director; Joel Elkins, general superintendent; Brenda Eakins, treasurer; and Travis Garst, solid waste director.
Anna Porter said they are reinspecting real estate property for the year. Anna attended a training course for new software of damage assessment appraisal tracking.
Kevin Peroutek reported he will also attend the training for damage assessment appraisal for the state mandated software from KDEM. He attended the Homeland Security meeting where each county was provided an 800 radio. He has a volunteer that will begin working to aid with emergency preparedness operations. Kevin reported for the weed department that he attended a training last week in Colby. He is working with the sheriff to possibly share an employee to work for both departments.
Cindy Becker said she hired a new office manager-WIC clerk, Jillian Worm and part-time RN, Michell Lindberg. Cindy said the Jewell County Health Department has partnered with the state to offer fluoride varnish treatments to all children 6 years and younger. They have enrolled in the State 340B program for sexually transmitted diseases. They have also applied for and received a grant from Vitamin Angels that allows them to provide free prenatal vitamins to all women of childbearing age. They also received a grant for 100 children’s bike helmets to hand out to Jewell County children. The plan is to partner with Sheriff Jacobs to go to the school to give out helmets and the bike safety education information. She said Dakota Alvarez is working to obtain her certification as a breastfeeding consultant. They have also been training to be a qualified provider of presumptive eligibility. She reminded everyone that they have home covid tests, face masks and hand sanitizer available to hand out free of charge.
Carla Waugh said her office has assisted cities with budget preparations along with all the townships, fire and cemetery districts. Carla said that she sent the RNR notices file to Postalocity for the mailing to Jewell County property owners.
Alex Pierce said she prepared a non-disclosure for the weed department, the legal notice for the ATM and reviewed documents for other departments. She reported the following cases: 200 traffic; 20 fish and game; five child in need of care: four juvenile felony and 22 criminal cases.
Keith Roe attended the JCCDA meeting.
Ed Duskie said he attended the online meeting for JJA.
Brent Beck said he attended the Jewell County Hospital Board meeting.
The commissioners went into executive session for 10 minutes to discuss non-elected personnel with Alex Pierce and Cindy Becker present. Regular session resumed with no action taken.
Don Jacobs, sheriff, said one of the dispatchers quit. He discussed the courthouse security system serviced by Pierce Electronics.
Joel Elkins, general superintendent, discussed the bridge on the south side of section 12 of Vicksburg township.
Chairman Beck opened discussion for consideration of the proposed installation of an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in the lobby of the Jewell County Sheriff’s Office at the courthouse. The ATM would be installed and serviced through Farmway Credit Union. The cost to Jewell County would be limited to minimal electricity used in powering the machine. Commissioners approved the installation of Farmway Credit Union’s ATM in the Sheriff’s Office.
