SCHOOL
For Superior school students thinking summer was flying by way to fast, on Friday they got what some considered to be good news. The $1.6 million remodellng project started before the spring semester concluded is behind schedule and the state fire marshal did not approve the plan to begin the fall semester on Aug. 10.
The current schedule calls for the first day of school for the PK through high school students to be moved back to Monday, Aug. 21.
The open house for the PK-5 students will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17.
For middle school and new high school students their open house will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17.
The Kona Ice truck visit to the school has been cancelled.
Homecoming which had been scheduled for late August when the Wildcats play the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders will be rescheduled to a later date. The athletic schedules are not changing.
High school football practice began Monday as planned. High school volleyball, girls golf and cross country practice will begin Monday.
Junior high sports practice will tentatively begin Monday, Aug. 14 at 4 p.m.
The main purpose of the renovation is student safety and to provide handicapped accessible restrooms.
With the project, the school will gain a service window that will be used when a student forgets something at home and a parent brings it. The athletic director’s office is turning into a concession stand. There will be a mother’s room near the faculty restroons, a new athletic director’s office, a private in-school suspension room with a camera and a bigger nurse’s office with a recovery chair.
The west wall of the library is being divided into sections, one being a tech office, the second being the librarian’s desk and the third being book checkout.
The student restrooms have been gutted and are being redone with new plumbing.
For the seniors, having a later starting date is nothing new. When they were ready to start kindergarten the start day was moved back to allow completion of the elementary school wing.
Unlike 60 years ago when the district utilized five buildings, the school complex is now one building with assembly starting in 1964 when high school classes were moved to the West Eight Street location. Since then there have been a number of remodeling and addition projects.
