Cheryl Faimon receives "Quilt of Valor"

On July 4, 2023, SGM Cheryl A. Faimon was presented a "Quilt of Valor" at Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital in San Antonio Texas. Cheryl's daughter, Jessica Willis, narrated the formal ceremony. In attendance for the formal ceremony were her son, Lindon Willis, Jr., brother-in-law, Don Kohmetscher, daughter, Jessica Willis, cousin, Bridget Menke, sister, Dee Kohmetscher, friends Megan and Tina Silva.

Quilts of Valor began in 2003. Cheryl's quilt was the 351,835 to be given.

The "Quilt of Valor" was pieced by Marie Buescher, Sherri Buescher, Brenda Janda and Kay Theer; quilted by Beth Himmelberg; bound by Marie Buescher and Kay Theer; all from Cheryl's hometown of Lawrence, Nebraska. The recognition of the names of the talented women was obvious on Cheryl's face as the label was read. Cheryl expressed her ah and appreciation for the love and care these women took.

In late 1976, SGM Cheryl Ann Faimon of rural Blue Hill, enlisted in the United State Army with a delayed entry.

In the summer of 1977, shortly after Cheryl's graduation from Lawrence High School, she went to basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama.

She then went to Fort Devens, Massachusetts, for Morris Code Interceptor School.

From 1978 to 1981 she was stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, as a Morris Code Interceptor.

From 1981 to 1985, she was stationed at Augsburg in Germany.

From 1985 to 1986, she served at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, as a Morris Code Interceptor instructor.

In 1992, after 15 years of active duty, the military downsized, and Cheryl went to inactive reserves.

In 1999, Cheryl's status changed to active reserves.

In 2005, she returned to active duty and then mobilized and deployed to Iraq.

While in Iraq, she served in intelligence until late Spring of 2006.

Upon her return from Iraq, she went back to active reserves.

In 2007, Cheryl received a call from the Core of Engineers in Washington, D.C. for a 1-year active duty position. She extended active duty in Washington, D.C. through 2009.

Her final stay was 2009 to 2010 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where she served at the Human Resources Command Headquarters.

While serving in the military, Cheryl received numerous awards.

She is most proud of her Sergeant Major E9 rank.

The most special person she met in the military was her late husband, Lindon Lee Willis, Sr.
