SHS player at national volleyball tourney

Reagan Meyers is following in the footsteps of her older sisters as she enters her freshman year at Superior High School.

Meyers is a member of the South Central Black U15 Club volleyball team. She was introduced to the national spotlight at the recent USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship held at Chicago.

The team finished in third place in the Liberty Division which had teams from California to Florida and everywhere in between competing.

The team made the final bracket after advancing to the nationals last year as an U14 team.

The team overcame numerous hurdles to advance to the tournament finals bracket. There were dramatic must-win matches over teams which had previously beat the U15’s.

Though they fell in the semi-final match, the team and their coaches couldn’t be prouder of their effort and fourth place finish.

The team began its season in January. Unlike many other teams, the South Central team empathizes the high school experience over total dedication to club volleyball.

The players alongside Meyers are from area schools David City, Deshler, Shelton, High Plains Community, Sutton, Nebraska Christian and Hastings St. Cecilia. The odd part of this is they will all face each other across the net during the regular season then pull together, joined by a love for volleyball, to compete on the club volleyball circuit.

The team is coached by Libby Lollman, head coach, Brenda Glunz, Jadyn Branson, Patrick Glunz and Jill Bauer.

Bauer, a Deshler resident, is a veteran coach.

She shared her thoughts on the team’s roller coaster ride at the tournament.

“I realized that in all my years of playing and coaching career, I have never had a moment as special as this. I told the girls that even though we were somewhat disappointed, I wanted them to be sure to show joy on their faces for our pictures because this was a moment they would NEVER (sic) forget. They needed to remember the joy of the ENTIRE (sic) experience. I started coaching some of these girls when they were 10-11 years old and watched them grow as players, friends and incredible young women. To see the love of VB (sic) grow in their hearts gives me pride beyond measure. The week was full of ups and downs, laughter and tears, fun and fears but I choose to end it with JOY (sic).”

Meyers will be a welcome addition to the Superior team when the 2023 season begins. How much joy her teammates will feel when they face her as an opponent is an interesting question.
