Celebrations mark birth of a nation in most communities

Holiday events

With Independence Day (July 4th) coming on a Tuesday this year, the establishment of our nation this year will be celebrated on various days. Perhaps that is good for the various celebration times will make it easier for those who like to celebrate in more that one community.

This isn’t a complete list but here are some of the celebration dates and locations:

Saturday, July 1, the community of Republic will celebrate with the activities being located east of the community center.

Sunday, July 2, the community of Burr Oak will celebrate in and near the community center.

Lawrence has a meal planned for July 4.

Nelson’s big days will be Saturday and Sunday, July 1 and 2 with a meal on July 4.

Though they weren’t advertised as Independence Day Celebrations, Chester and Edgar held celebrations that included fireworks on Saturday. Deshler Daze was a week earlier.

Superior has a long standing tradition of celebrating on July 4th and that will be true again this year.

The Superior Volunteer Fire Department usually concludes the day with the biggest event and that will be true again this year.

A free fireworks show will be presented at Brodstone Memorial Field (the Superior High School football field) at Dusk on Tuesday.

Superior’s day will begin earlier with the 41st annual FireKracker Run. Forty of those runs have been held in person. One at the height of the COVID pandemic was held virtually.

In conjunction with the run, the local PEO Chapter will be serving breakfast in Superior’s City Park.

There will be a sand volleyball tournament in Lincoln Park between 9:30 and 12:30.

The Superior FFA Chapter will sponsor two events this week. The first will be the third annual kickball tournament staring at 6:30 Friday evening. The tournament will be held on the SCOR ballfield located near the Lincoln Park Scout Cabin. An ad on Page 2 of this issue give details on how to enter a team.

The annual Water Balloon Wars competition will be held on the T-Ball field beginning at 12:45 Tuesday afternoon. Information on how to enter a team may also be found Page 2 of this issue.

The Superior 3000 Foundation sixth annual golf tournament will be held on Saturday, July 8. More information about that tournament is also found on Page 2 of this issue.

Traditionally the population of Lovewell State Park exceeds that of Superior on July 4th and it will probably do so again this year.

As irrigation started early this year the elevation of the lake is lower than some years but it is still near the conservation pool and would provide plenty of water for water sports. However, the sad note about the lake is that Thursday, June 22, the state health department issued a blue algae alert and has warned about the dangers associated with making contact with the water.

With that alert swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing activities are discouraged near visible blooms. The beach area is closed.

Should that advisory be lifted in the next few days we will share that information on our website (superiorne.com) and on our newspapers’ Facebook pages.

On Tuesday the lake elevation was given as 1,582.1 feet above sea level and only one-half foot below conservation level.

Here in Superior the city council has modified the days fireworks may be sold and shot. The new regulation has been published in recent issues of The Express. Fireworks may only be sold and discharged within certain hours June 30 through July 4. Those hours are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. June 30 through July 2 and 10 a.m. to midnight on July 3 and 4.
