New building at Nuckolls Co. fairgrounds
A barn is under construction at the Nuckolls County Fairgrounds. It will used to house the fair's poultry and rabbits exhibits. It will also be used for the poultry and rabbit show. The location of the building is roughly the same as the old one it replaces.
The building, 160 square feet is 20 by 80 feet. This building will have a concrete floor. It is a wood structure with tin siding and roofing and no windows. However, it will have a bird screen two feet below the roof line to provide air flow. The exterior will be white with green trim.
Dustin Cassell, president of the fair board, expects the new concrete floor will be easier to clean than the dirt floor of the old building.
This project will cost around $53,000. A grant from the USDA will pay for 55 percent of the project. The board hopes to pay the rest using loans, events and tax levies. Another grant given was able to make new rabbit and chicken cages. Since they have a new facility, members of the fair board hopes to see a rise of rabbit and poultry contestants within the next couple years.
The Nuckolls County Fair and Rodeo will take place the last week of July, 22 through 29. The construction of the building should be finished in time for this year's fair.
