Jewell City Council approves council appointments

The Jewell City Council met in regular session Monday, May 1, at City Hall. Those in attendance were Mayor, Darrell Bohnert; Council Members, Josh Burks, Max Burks, Gaye Daniels, Bob Freeman, Derek Birdsell and Kristie Anderson, city clerk.

Don Jacobs, Jewell County Sheriff, was present and mentioned increasing the law enforcement budget for 2024. The council would review the budget input request.

Marsha Ericson and Charlene Nonhoff, library board members, were present to discuss the library budget for 2024.

James Reed, code enforcement officer, told of receiving a complaint about dogs.

Kristie Anderson presented the monthly clerk’s report. Anderson reminded the council members whose terms are ending in January 2024 that their applications are due by June 1. Anderson also gave an update on the community center and motel reservation for the month of May.

David Knappert presented the monthly maintenance report. Knappert said a water system inspection was scheduled for May 10 and a review meeting May 11 in Beloit. He also said a spot in the sidewalk by the daycare is needing repaired. He told about projects he is going to be working on.

The Land Bank Board provided the minutes from their last meeting.

Mayor Bohnert presented the changed library budget for 2024. It was approved by the council.

Anderson presented the township fire contracts for the coming year. A motion was maded to keep the same amounts as last year’s contract fees. All approved.

There was a motion to appoint Kristie Anderson, city clerk; Jim Johnson, city judge; and Jacque Williams, city treasurer. The appointments were apporved.

Anderson presented building permits from Dakota Smith, Matt Homelvig and Forrest Crouse. All were approved. A motion was approved to add $25,000 to the equipment purchase budget making the 2024 budget up to $45,000.

The annual meeting of the Jewell Community Center Association was held.
