Many area residents slept through it but the instruments which measure earthquake activity on the plains, have confirmed what some area residents suspected.
An earthquake happened in the Cowles area of northeastern Webster County at 11:56 p.m. Thursday. It measured 2.9 on the scale used to describe earthquakes. It is thought to have happened 10 km below the surface which would be about 6.5 miles down.
It was considered to be slight. Earthquakes of that magnitude may be felt slightly by some people. Building damage is usually not reported with minor earthquakes of that magnitude. More than one million earthquakes occur each year in the range of 2.0 to 2.9. The recent earthquake which shook Ecuador and took at least 14 lives measured 6.8.
