Superior has a new police officer that comes to serve with a lot of experience and drive. These are key words for Wilbur Young whose lifelong dream is his current lifestyle. Wilbur was born and raised in Belleville. He went to school from the first through the eighth grade there. When his dad took a job with Reinke’s, the family moved to Hebron where Wilbur went to high school. When he graduated high school, he went to college for a while in Moberly, Missouri, to become a paramedic. Other classes that supported his main courses were in the pharmacology area.
At the age of 6, Wilbur was fascinated by the law enforcement community that he found himself surrounded by. He wanted to be in law enforcement. He would visit Keith Moorhead, the local police chief. In 1981, at the age of 19, he became a certified EMT. He was also a member of the volunteer fire department. He then worked in the Beatrice Police Department for six years. He went to Tekamah to be the chief of police for the next four years.
After 10 years in law enforcement, Wilbur took a break from police work and went into manufacturing but he didn’t like to be indoors. Wilbur likes to be out and about seeing everything that is going on. He decided to contract with a private company to do physical security work for the State of Nebraska which lasted 10 years.
Wilbur later became an investigator for the Beatrice Developmental Center. He investigated abuse, and neglectful situations. He also investigated possible medical error deaths. He then worked in the ambulance department in Jefferson County. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office recruited him where he worked for seven years.
He decided to move on to Superior because he would like to help in the community.
Wilbur is familiar with the Nebraska laws. He would like to remind drivers to please observe the speed limits in school zones and every street in Superior. He’d like to see community involvement with the Superior Police Department. Another objective is to educate residents on the various scams that are going around targeting citizens. Wilbur would also like to organize a Neighborhood Watch and a National Night out that would educate residents on the goals and priorities of law enforcement.
He and his wife, Michelle, are looking forward to buying a home here and becoming part of the community.
